Letter To Artists ...

As young professionals trying to make a living doing what we love, there is a time, place and etiquette to how you approach people to talk about your music.

When you see a producer another rap artist or even someone who writes a blog, make sure you approach them with the right manners. Don't say "yo, can I holla" none of that, it's disrespectful.

- Make sure you have a proper business card or your music to give to them. When sent via email, make sure you LABEL your music properly, with your name, track name and where else I can find your music.

- Make sure you have proper hygiene when you approach them. (Everyone owns soap, water, toothpaste etc, so there is no need to smell)

- Have a quick 15 second speech, get to your point when you're talking. Nobody likes a person that rambles about nothing.

- After getting a producers, or another rapper, artist business card etc, do not bombard them on social media. You have to be patient and realize we get a lot of emails, tweets, Instagram comments, tagged in a lot of photos so you must try to be patient. Do threaten them via email asking why haven't they reviewed your music because that will be the quickest way to get recognized and blocked!

- Social media is another following we also look at. What I've caught artists doing is buying followers, that's a huge NO. Lets just say we wanted to book you for a show, I see you have 100k followers via Instagram and Twitter so you should be able to pack a show. Your 100k followers doesn't equal 50 likes, it just doesn't. So when we book you and nobody shows, you make me and you look bad and nothing to show for your 100k followers. So as an artist BUILD FROM THE GROUND UP.

- Know that this industry is very small. So when you talk to a major music executive and you try to go around him to another music executive , be careful because once your name gets out there and these music executives find out who you are, you're FINISHED. Everybody is going to know you or someone who can get in touch with you, so when you try to be "fast" and take the easy way out, realize it's NOT worth it.

Overall of this message is to take your time. Build from the ground up, do your research on the people you want to get next to, and continue to make great quality music. I hope you all take it this as a refresher course and learn from your mistakes.
